Acceptable Use Policy
Notice of Technology Acceptable Use Policy for Scholars:
Your child may have access to many school-related activities and District technology resources, including the internet. Internet access at your child’s school is filtered, monitored and is compliant with the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and School Board Policy. Your child will be required to follow the Acceptable Use Policy and guidelines that are stated in Board Policy, the referenced Manual, and be bound to those terms. There is NO expectation of privacy while utilizing the district network, computers, or any device attached to the network.
Miles Ahead Charter School seeks to provide a 21st Century Learning Environment for our scholars. As part of this initiative, all scholars at MACS are 1:1 on devices. At times, teachers may allow scholars to take devices home to help support learning targets, complete assignments and/or projects. Before scholars are permitted to use school issued technology, scholars and their families must sign the school’s Technology Agreement. The Scholar Technology Agreement can be found in the CREW Family Portal.
At no point are scholars permitted to use school issued devices to:
- Search the internet for any illegal purposes
- Access any social media networking site
- Engage in any form of cyberbullying
- Use profane, obscene, abusive language
- Violate someone else’s privacy
- Share their password or someone else’s with anyone outside of MACS’ personnel
Any violation of internet use and/or abuse of any kind to school issued devices will result in immediate termination of privileges.
Electronic Devices
As a school who seeks to foster a community of scholars who utilizes technology appropriately in their development of becoming 21st Century Learners, MACS will ensure that scholars have access to necessary technology resources during the school day. Scholars are not permitted to bring additional electronic devices on campus. Electronic devices include but are not limited to; games (Nintendo DS, etc.), tablets, cd players, i-Pads, i-Pods, etc. Should a scholar decide to bring any such
device on campus, MACS’ Staff will confiscate the device & contact a parent to retrieve it from the Main Office.
We do understand that many families send their scholars to school with cell-phones for various reasons, however scholars are not permitted to take cell phones out of their bookbags. Should any scholar decide to take the cell phone out of their book-bag during school hours, Before/Aftercare, or while using a MACS transportation vendor, a MACS’ Staff member will confiscate the cell phone & contact a parent to retrieve the phone from the Main Office.
Social Media
We believe that the use of social media for young children is a familial decision, but its usage or access during the academic day or on MACS owned devices is strictly prohibited. Additionally, families should be aware that social media can cause stresses to peer relationships impacting the learning experience, and should therefore be strictly monitored. Any actions occurring on social media activity negatively implicating the safety or impact of the teaching, learning, or the scholar experience at MACS will result in consequences at MACS including cyberbullying, threats against the school, doxing, etc. and therefore subject the scholars to the Code of Conduct. For more details about Bullying or Cyberbullying, please refer to those sections of the handbook.
If any of the above items are brought to school and are lost/stolen, MACS’ will not assume any responsibility for such items, nor will we employ in tracking/search efforts in locating the device (s).
